MKJ likes to combine small, everyday narratives with bigger, social subject matter and she taps simultaneously into the tradition of fine art imagery and vernacular iconography to develop her own visual language. Ideas of collective identities, the tension between the individual and the group, and issues of gender form a red line in her work. Of late, her practice revolves especially around ideas of authenticity, individuality and identity. It seems to her that we all play a continuous game of hide and seek with ourselves and with others. A withholding and revealing. She likes to focus on the playfulness of these acts. Besides working in 2D , she also makes use of props, masks and her body to create still and moving images. She works with elaborate sets, but more often than not, these are reduced back to 2D imagery and in the process, information is lost and found.

Monika has been awarded a Master of Arts in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in London, a Bachelor (Honours) of Arts in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts and an MA in Bestuurskunde at Leiden University.
