Restless Elements 2020

This group exhibition concludes a 6 months artist-in-residence programme at Re:Centre, Thames Wharf Studios, London. The residency brought together the work of eleven international artists with diverse practices including painting, photography, sculpture, print-making, installation, drawing and textiles.

MKJ interpreted the theme of restlessness in two different ways; first as the unease in light of the influence of social media on the collective mindset. She started out exploring ideas about modern narcissism and the phenomenon of echo chambers. Social media are also a constant distraction. It appears to be more difficult “to be in the now”. “There & Here” is an analysis of experiencing the Australian bushfires from the other side of the world. As she progressed through the residency, Monika started to think about our lifespan as a source of restlessness. Our allotted time is all we have. The process of living includes a deep sense of urgency, choices, missed opportunities, and the chasing of dreams.

MKJ’s contribution to the exhibition consists of paintings, etchings and a video installation

MKJ’s creative process is characterised by reflection through making. During this residency she usually started out with her sketchbook and developed the ideas further by bouncing in between different media like painting, ink drawing, print, sculpture and the moving image.
